In the arena of transparent material science, three polymer materials, PVC, EVA, and TPU, are having the legends of modern industry with their unique properties. They seem ordinary, but they "write" a wide range of applications for the various bags in our daily necessities.
PVC (polyvinyl chloride): a counterattack of civilian materials
Keywords: Cheaper, Cheap, high-transparency, and environmental protection.
Specification: Density 1.15–1.35 g/cm³, hardness ShA 40–90, 0.3/0.5 mm film is the regular thickness we use in our daily bags; Plasticizer must be added to soften, and the mainstream DOP has been included in the restriction list by European REACH.
Application: Cosmetic bag, Toiletry bag, Floor mats, Promotional transparent bags for supermarkets.
Advantage: high transparency, water resistance, and easy printing; The lowest cost, easy to obtain raw materials, rich color, acid and alkali resistance, water resistance, and can be flame-retardant. It can be compounded with other materials to increase waterproofing, easy to scrub, and performs other functions to improve its advantages.
Disadvantage: low temperature hardening, easy yellowing, and a recovery rate of < 10%.The lowest cost, easy to obtain raw materials, high transparency, rich color, acid and alkali resistance, water resistance, flame retardant.

EVA (ethyl vinyl acetate): The explorer of flexibility
Key words: light, foamable, milky white, hazy.
Specification: density 0.91–0.93 g/cm³, the higher the VA content, the softer it is; The density can be pressed to 0.18 g/cm³ after closed-cell foaming, which is environmentally friendly.
Applications:
1) "Cosmetic bag, washing three-dimensional bag" - hot-pressed integrated moldings;
2) "Camera bag" - Can be used for lining with drop-resistant;
3) "Mommy storage bag" - washable, phthalate-free.
Advantages: good elasticity, good cushioning, still flexible below 0 °C, no plasticizer, non-toxic and odorless, it can be compounded with other materials to increase waterproofing, easy to scrub, and other functions to improve its advantages.
Disadvantages: cannot be made of high permeability, the surface is easy to stain with dust, high temperature resistance is poor, about 80 °C softens and deforms, the surface is slippery, the wear resistance is average, the surface is slippery, the wear resistance is average.

TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane): the innovator of engineering plastics
Keywords: high elasticity, scratch resistance, environmental protection ace.
Specifications: density 1.10–1.20 g/cm³, tensile strength ≥ 30 MPa, no plasticizers, mechanically recyclable, incineration halogen-free.
Applications:
(1) 0.3 mm matte "airplane box" – Dior Pre-Spring 2025;
(2) 0.5 mm transparent "box bag" Jacquemus;
(3) TPU composite nylon Longchamp "Green Line" series, the carbon footprint is 38% lower than PVC.
Advantages: high elasticity + high wear resistance, oil resistance, solvent resistance, hydrolysis resistance, hot melt welding, seamless waterproofing, REACH, RoHS compliant, 100% mechanical recyclable, good environmental protection image. High transparency (90%) allows it to be made into a "glassy" handbag or a matte high-quality texture. Same as PVC and EVA, it can be compounded with other materials to increase waterproofing, easy to scrub, and other functions to improve its advantages as well.
Disadvantages: Expensive, density 1.1–1.2, twice as heavy as EVA, to make an "ultra-light" midsole, need to foam TPU granules, and the cost is doubled. Some polyester TPUs will be hydrolyzed after long-term soaking in water, and the polyether type formula needs to be changed.

Here is the comparison chart for PVC, EVA, and TPU for some performance indices:
| Index | PVC | EVA | TPU | Remark |
| Light Transmittance % | 92% | Semi-transparent 50% | 90% | PVC is slightly better |
| Cryogenic bending °C | -10 °C | -70 °C | -60 °C | EVA is optimal |
| Abrasion Resistant | 200 | 150 | 50 | TPU is more triple life |
| Oil Resistant | Poor | Good | Excellent | TPU is anti-sunscreen |
| Unit Cost | 1x | 1.8x | 3.5x | Based on PVC |
Environmental Protective Index | ONE STAR | THREE STARS | THREE STARS | Per EU 2026 Plastic Ban Score |
How to tell the difference between PVC, EVA, and TPU?
From the smell: Noticeably pungent, sour, or "plastic" smell, especially when the sealed bag is first opened for PVC. No smell for EVA and TPU.
From the burn: Normally, PVC is yellow up and green down with exhaling white smoke; EVA is blue flame; TPU is yellow flame.
From bending rebound: TPU rebound is fast and silent; PVC rebounds slowly and is accompanied by a "click" sound; EVA turns white after folding, but basically does not rebound.
PVC allows you to "spend a little money to do big things, EVA gives you "light clouds, and TPU writes "environmental protection + luxury" into the brand's DNA - handbags are no longer just about packing things, they are voting for consumers and choosing the future of the earth.
If I were to summarize it with a short poem, it would be:
PVC: cheap, transparent, and not cold-resistant;
EVA: light, soft, environmentally friendly, and non-wear-resistant;
TPU: wear-resistant and highly elastic, has the highest price.
